Lunenburg special town meeting adds $418,056 in new state aid to schools after rejecting a Select Board-backed cut. School Committee Chair Laura Brzovsky moved to raise and appropriate the full cherry sheet increase for the Lunenburg Public Schools' fiscal 2027 budget, funding a second grade teacher, a Turkey Hill reading specialist, a full-time high school assistant principal and $60,000 in athletic transportation. A Select Board amendment to trim the figure to $397,189 failed after members argued the town was double-counting $20,867 already earmarked elsewhere; the Finance Committee opposed the amendment 5 to 1.
"That money will have to go into a fund and be re-appropriated," said school committee member Mandy Gilman, who organized the petition forcing the meeting. Voters separately approved transferring $30,308 from a winter-storm recovery fund to restore girls lacrosse, alpine skiing and middle school basketball and track, after parent Matt Nazarenko's petition sought $151,338.
