LUNENBURG — The Lunenburg Finance Committee opened a hearing on the Nov. 17 special town meeting warrant and learned a track and field retaining wall is "in a state of failure." Finance Director Karen Barrett said free cash likely won't be certified by Nov. 17, citing 624 active funds still being reconciled. A school official said the wall failure closed two track lanes and will force the bleachers and press box out of use after this season; a $195,830 article would fund engineering for a future reconstruction. DPW Director Bill Benard and consultant Jerese Swartz of Weston & Sampson pitched a stormwater utility fee, projected at $85 a year for single-family homes versus roughly $109 now paid through taxes.
Member Peter Beardmore called the stormwater permit "a game of chicken" and favored funding it through the operating budget instead. No votes were taken on substantive articles; deliberation continues Nov. 12.
