LUNENBURG — The Lunenburg Finance Committee previewed a crowded Oct. 22 special town meeting warrant without voting on any of it. Members split over a proposed $300,000 transfer into a new Special Education Reserve Fund, with Chair Chris Menard and Peter Beardmore wanting a written use policy first and Ana Lockwood calling herself "a hard sell" on funding it at all this year. Beardmore separately argued the Finance Committee should reject fast-tracking a $195,830 engineering contract toward an estimated $2 million track and field redesign outside the capital planning process, saying "there's no good reason to push it through a process that it was not designed to be a part of." The committee also discussed a proposed stormwater utility fee and an advisory vote on demolishing the TC Passios building.
Resident John Bowen told the board during public comment that using reserve funds to backstop the schools would let officials "decide that in the open" — or avoid doing so. Formal recommendations on all warrant items are expected at a hearing Oct. 22 and a vote in early November.
