Lunenburg Conservation Commission Approves Three Permits at June 17 Meeting

LUNENBURG — June 17, 2026 — Lunenburg Conservation Commission unanimously approved three construction permits and set spending budgets for three conservation accounts at its June 17 meeting. Chair Jenny Puther and four commissioners voted to issue negative determinations — allowing work to proceed without formal orders of conditions — for a carport at 44 Peninsula Drive and a driveway replacement at 71 Chestnut Street, and approved orders of conditions for a three-lot common driveway on Ruth Street by Benjamin Builders, a home demolition and reconstruction at 18 Oak Ridge Road moved out of the 50-foot no-structure zone to 51.2 feet from the wetland, and a failed septic replacement at 146 Youngs Road. For a 314 Highland Street enforcement matter involving an unpermitted driveway culvert, the commission voted to require riprap infill and informal wetland replication rather than impose a fine, accepting Conservation Agent Herlin's characterization of the violation as an honest error by an elderly longtime resident. The commission voted for the first time to formally budget its wetlands protection bylaw fee account at $9,350 — roughly half its balance — for outreach and programming, and allocated the $27,265.54 Hollis Road revolving fund and $40,329.11 Timber Rights fund for fiscal year 2027. Members flagged a Massachusetts House environmental bond bill they say could curtail local wetlands home-rule authority, with Commissioner Mary Wilson calling it "a huge deal with the state wanting to take away home rule from the towns."
